【Osaka/Kita-Shinchi】Gourmet: Chuka Labo Choyo
I had the "Ultimate Mapo Tofu Set" (1,000 yen) for lunch at Chuka Labo Choyo!
This hidden gem, located in the basement of a building in Kita-Shinchi, is run by a former head chef of Chinese cuisine at the Dojima Hotel, offering authentic flavors. The lunch menu is simple, with two main options: "Mapo Tofu" or "Steamed Fish." Without hesitation, I chose the Mapo Tofu!
The Mapo Tofu served was a vibrant red dish, signaling its spiciness and numbing sensation from the chili oil and Sichuan pepper. As I scooped it with a spoon, the aroma wafted up with the steam, and the first bite delivered a complex flavor experience—spicy yet delicious! The dish was packed with coarsely ground meat, and the depth of flavor from fermented black beans and Sichuan pepper oil was truly impressive.
The set includes rice, pickled vegetables, salad, and dessert (almond tofu), with unlimited rice refills. If you're not a fan of the numbing sensation, you can request less Sichuan pepper to suit your taste.
The interior has a calm, modern Chinese vibe, and the service is attentive. At just 1,000 yen, the quality is outstanding and offers great value for money. This is the essence of a Kita-Shinchi lunch, where you can savor the depth of spiciness and aroma. Next time I'm in Osaka, I'll definitely come back to try the steamed fish as well. It was a truly satisfying experience!
