If you stay in Jiufen, you can visit when there is nobody and the shops are closed. The atmosphere is quite different then. This narrow alleyway is filled with local shops and souvenirs along the way making it a very popular spot for tourists to discover Jiufen. You will find local delicacies and gift shops. Walking through it, you tread on cobblestone paths, surrounded by weathered red bricks and intricately carved wooden windows. The air carries a mix of fish crisps, pastries, and the river breeze, evoking a sense of nostalgia that feels like rewinding time, immersing you in an old dream. I arrived at Tamsui Old Street on a sunny afternoon. Stepping out of the Tamsui MRT station, I followed the flow of people and the riverside path. In the distance, Guanyin Mountain lay quietly along the water's edge, its surface shimmering with light. Ferries glided across the river, leaving transparent strokes in their wake. This scene intoxicated me even before I set foot on the old street. The old street stretches from the MRT station to the direction of Fort San Domingo, spanning just a few hundred meters yet holding a century's worth of prosperity and history. On both sides of the street are old shops and food stalls selling delicacies like A-gei, fish crisps, sour plum juice, and iron eggs, as well as a taste of "childhood memories." I bought a cup of hand-shaken sour plum juice from a roadside vendor. Its sweet and sour flavor, tinged with a hint of saltiness, was refreshing. The vendor's warm smile and voice added a touch of humanity to the drink. Along the way, I deliberately turned into a small alley called "Chongjian Street." This was one of Tamsui's earliest developed areas, once bustling with merchants during the late Qing dynasty. Today, though sparsely populated, it still retains a unique blend of brick Western-style buildings and traditional Minnan architecture. Weathered slogans and remnants of shop signs from the Japanese colonial era adorn the walls, casting a quiet melancholy and serenity under the slanting sunlight. Continuing forward, I reached the famous "Customs Wharf" and "Little White House." My favorite spot, however, was sitting on a stone bench by the Tamsui River, watching the sunset slowly sink into the water. The setting sun painted the sky red, igniting the last golden glow in both the sky and the river. Couples, street performers, and visitors along the shore all seemed to soften in the light and shadows. At that moment, I finally understood the meaning of "Tamsui"—not just a place name but a way of life: tranquil, slow-paced, yet full of genuine flavor. As night fell, lanterns lit up the old street, illuminating the paths of travelers heading home. I slowly walked back to the MRT station, leaving behind the bustling old street and the ancient charm carried by the river breeze. This day in Tamsui was not about grand landscapes but rich emotions and intricate details, like a handwritten letter to be read and remembered slowly.

After a decade of planning and a budget of 3 billion NTD, the New Taipei City Art Museum in Yingge has finally opened its doors. It was planned and built by Dr. Mackay in 1879. It has now been transformed into the New Taipei City Tamsui Museum of History, which houses many medical instruments of the time and some brief introductions to Dr. Mackay. From the old photos in the museum, it can be seen that the Huwei Kai Medical Clinic looks almost exactly the same as it did back then, with no special changes. This 85-year-old suspension bridge has withstood numerous storms and earthquakes, but it still stands firm over the Xindian River. During this period, the cables have been replaced to ensure the safety of the bridge. If you come to Bitan and don’t walk on the suspension bridge, you can’t say you have been to Bitan. The church is a pseudo-Gothic architecture with the "Trinity" of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit on the front. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of Tamsui Presbyterian Church, the first church established by Dr. Mackay in Taiwan on April 10, 1872. It is also the founding anniversary of the Tamsui Church. The exterior walls of the chapel are made of exposed bricks, while the interior is made of reinforced RC columns and floor slabs. The chapel still retains its original appearance, including the century-old bell, old organ, church building monument, seats, pulpit, communion table, etc. In addition to his contributions to medicine, Dr. Mackay also did not forget the missionary purpose of the Presbyterian Church of Canada. There are several ways to hike Dajian Mountain. The most popular—and also the most challenging—route starts from the stone staircase trail next to Tianshou Temple. This path consists of a total of 1,145 steps leading to the summit, making it a true test of both stamina and endurance! If you're looking for a workout that leaves you sweating and feeling the burn, this is the route for you. Personally, I recommend taking the paved road along Qinjin Road. While this route is longer, it is much easier to walk and is lined with blooming cherry blossoms. The highlight is the stretch near the Maitreya Mountain Tiandao Monastery, where both sides of the road are flanked by a breathtaking sea of cherry blossoms. From the back of the monastery, you can reach the summit of Dajian Mountain. Take a moment to rest at the pavilion and enjoy the panoramic view of Taipei City and the cherry blossoms—it's absolutely stunning! For the descent, take the stone staircase back down to Tianshou Temple. This way, the return trip is more relaxed, sparing you from being out of breath or having wobbly legs.
