Important Notes: Remember to close gates as you go (there might be sheep!). And speaking of sheep, watch your step – there'll be plenty of their "deposits" along the way! 🐑💩 Because it's a clifftop area and exposed to the elements, it can get very cold and windy, so dress warmly! 🧣🧤

Farewell Spit
#summervacay
Farewell Spit is a narrow sand spit stretching 34 kilometers into the sea from the tip of Golden Bay. It’s a protected nature reserve and bird sanctuary, home to thousands of migratory and native birds. Summer brings out the area’s unique beauty, with warm weather, bright skies, and excellent visibility. While the inner beach is open to the public, most of the spit can only be accessed through guided eco-tours, which often include visits to the historic lighthouse and sand dune landscapes. It's an off-the-beaten-path experience for nature lovers and photographers, offering sweeping views, fascinating wildlife, and a sense of solitude.
Wharariki Beach: An Adventure Worth the Stunning View✨️🌊
This is the first and probably the last time I’ll visit Wharariki Beach. It’s really far, and getting here requires quite a bit of effort, from driving along winding roads to walking a trail through farmland and sand dunes. But despite all of that, I have to say—it was absolutely worth it. The view was nothing short of spectacular, with dramatic rock formations rising from the ocean, endless stretches of golden sand, and powerful waves crashing against the shore. It felt like stepping into a different world, untouched and wild.
I was incredibly lucky to visit on a perfect day, with clear skies and just the right amount of wind. The weather made the experience even more enjoyable, allowing me to fully appreciate the beauty of this remote paradise. The walk to the beach, though slightly challenging, only added to the sense of adventure. Along the way, I passed rolling green hills, curious sheep, and shifting dunes that made the journey feel magical.
While I might not return due to the effort it takes to get here, Wharariki Beach is definitely one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever seen. If you love nature, adventure, and raw, untouched landscapes, this place should be on your bucket list. Just be prepared for the journey—it’s not an easy one, but it’s one you won’t forget.

Wharariki Beach
#newzealandtrip A nice beach with a 20 minute walk from the car park through rolling green hills to the beach. We were there for sunset and it was beautiful with the rocks silhouetted by the setting sun. Good to go there when tide is lower so you can get into the cave from which the windows photo is taken. Also nice sand dunes and can spot some seals. Highly recommended😊
Puponga hilltop walk - Farewell Spit & Puponga Farm Park
#newzealandtrip The 6.5-hour trip by four-wheel-drive bus is well worth it. The detailed instructions along the way, the scenery is amazing, and you can see migratory birds and sea lions at close range. Impressively, if you walk all the way to the Green Hills, including Wharariki Beach at low tide, you have a great experience of the impressive beauty of this area. In short, if you come here, it is recommended to participate.

Wharariki Beach, New Zealand
Wharariki Beach is an iconic beach on the Tasman Sea, west of Cape Farewell, the northernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand.
The rocky arches and stacks of Wharariki Beach are Paleocene, around 55-65 million years old. The rocks are very distinctive quartz and feldspar rich sandstones with pebbly gravel conglomerates, that are pancake stacked on top of each other.
The highlight of Wharariki beach are the seal pups which have made it their playground. They use the pools on the beach to frolic and play in.
It is a one hours vehicle drive from Takaka, followed by a 30 minute farm walk. Or 2.5 hours from Nelson.
Travelers tend to explore the family friendly beaches of nearby Abel Tasman National Park, whereas they miss the remote rugged windswept coastline of NZ.
The track to Wharariki Beach travels over farm paddocks and through a section of coastal forest, before arriving at the beautiful windswept beach.

Wharariki Beach
Wharariki Beach, located on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island near Cape Farewell, is one of the country’s most dramatic and stunning beaches. Famous for its wind-swept sand dunes, sea caves, and iconic rock formations, Wharariki Beach offers a wild and remote experience that feels otherworldly. Wharariki Beach is often described as wild and untamed. The beach is vast and exposed, with powerful winds constantly shaping the sand dunes. The windswept landscape, combined with the rugged coastline, creates a sense of isolation and raw natural beauty that is unique to this part of New Zealand. Due to the wild nature of the beach, the surf at Wharariki Beach is rough and dangerous, making it unsuitable for swimming. The powerful waves and strong currents mean visitors should enjoy the beauty of the beach from the shore. However, the beach is perfect for long walks, exploring sea caves, and discovering hidden rock formations. There are no facilities on Wharariki Beach itself, which helps maintain its remote and wild character. However, nearby Puponga and Collingwood offer accommodation options, including holiday parks, cottages, and lodges. The lack of development on the beach makes it a great spot for those seeking peace and natural beauty without the distractions of modern amenities.
Wharariki Beach is a truly unique destination that offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, photographers, and those looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Its wild landscapes, iconic rock formations, and abundant wildlife make it one of New Zealand's most spectacular coastal treasures.
