Japan's Spiritual Homeland: Ise Grand Shrine

If Kyoto is considered the cultural capital of Japan, then Ise Grand Shrine is undoubtedly the soul of the nation. As the most revered Shinto shrine in Japan, Ise Grand Shrine is dedicated to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Omikami, and has long been regarded as the ultimate sacred site by both the imperial family and the people of Japan. It is often said that every Japanese person should visit this shrine at least once in their lifetime, and I finally had the chance to fulfill this heartfelt wish. Ise Grand Shrine is divided into two main areas: the Outer Shrine (Geku) and the Inner Shrine (Naiku), which are located several kilometers apart. It is recommended to start your pilgrimage at the Outer Shrine and follow the traditional route to the Inner Shrine. Within the Inner Shrine, landmarks such as the Uji Bridge, the clear waters of the Isuzu River, and the towering cedar trees lining the path create an atmosphere that calms the mind and soul with every step. Even if you do not practice Shinto, the tranquility and historical significance of this land can still deeply resonate within you. Be sure to arrive early in the morning when the crowds are sparse, the air is fresh, and the light is gentle.
