Wat Suthatsanaram, Ubon Ratchathani Province

Wat Suthat is located in Mueang District, north of Thung Si Mueang, Ubon Ratchathani Province. Its original name was Wat Suthat. It was built in 2396 by Ratchabut Sui and his relatives. Ratchabut Sui then went to fight the Vietnam War in Cambodia. After the war, he was appointed the governor of Ubon Ratchathani, but he died of cholera before his remains could be enshrined in the temple's pagoda. Wat Suthat has a beautiful chapel that combines Thai and European art. Inside the chapel is the sacred principal Buddha image, Phra Ming Mueang. The chapel is made of cream-colored stucco and is similar to nearby temples. The chapel is surrounded by statues of the Buddha image thief (or the happiness or wealth of the Buddha image thief). This temple is famous for its candle carvings. Every year, the temple participates in the activity of sending carved candles to preserve the traditions and culture of Ubon Ratchathani. The abbot, Phra Khru Thatsanobon (Phim), is the director of the candle making of this temple.
