A Journey to Hiroshima: Remembering the Past and Embracing Peace

Hiroshima was the city that left the deepest emotional impression on me during my trip to Japan. While it carries the scars of war, it also conveys a powerful message of peace and hope, making it more than just a tourist destination. The first stop on my itinerary was the Peace Memorial Park and the Atomic Bomb Dome. The Atomic Bomb Dome, preserved at the hypocenter of the explosion, silently conveyed the tragedy of war. At the Peace Memorial Museum, exhibits of records and artifacts from that time weighed heavily on my heart and filled me with solemnity. The Peace Bell and colorful paper cranes scattered throughout the park embodied the wishes of people hoping such events would never be repeated. Next, I took a ferry to Miyajima. The iconic red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine, appearing to float on the sea, was a breathtaking sight. Its scenery transformed dramatically with the tides, adding a sense of mystery. The freely roaming deer around the shrine added to the tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. I also indulged in Hiroshima's culinary delights. The multi-layered Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki was soft and hearty, while the seasonal Hiroshima oysters were light and savory, offering an exceptional taste. Lastly, I visited Hiroshima Castle. Although the structure was rebuilt after the war, it harmonized beautifully with its surroundings, exuding a serene charm. The exhibits inside provided insights into another facet of Hiroshima's history and culture. Hiroshima is a city that remembers its painful past while spreading a message of peace. It is also a destination where one can enjoy nature, tradition, and cuisine. It was a special journey that left a lasting impression and gave me much to reflect on.
